Non Destructive Testing

Advanced techniques ensuring material integrity and safety without causing damage

Non Destructive Testing

Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) utilizes non-invasive inspection techniques to evaluate material properties, locate defects, and determine defect features such as size, shape, and orientation. NDT’s goal is to inspect components safely, reliably, and cost-effectively without causing damage.

NDT is crucial in industrial sectors like Oil & Gas, Construction, Power, and Heavy Machinery. The ANTC NDT program offers training and certification according to ASNT recommended practice SNT-TC-1A, encompassing Theory, Mockups, and Practical applications.

Penetrant Testing

In Penetrant Testing, the test object is coated with a solution containing a visible or fluorescent dye. Excess solution is removed from the surface, leaving the dye in surface-breaking defects. A developer is then applied to draw the penetrant out of the defects. For fluorescent dyes, ultraviolet light is used to make the bleed-out fluoresce brightly, revealing imperfections. For visible dyes, the color contrast between the penetrant and developer makes defects easily visible.

Magnetic Particle Testing

This NDT method involves inducing a magnetic field in a ferromagnetic material and dusting the surface with iron particles, either dry or suspended in liquid. Surface and near-surface flaws disrupt the magnetic field, causing some of it to leak out at the surface. Iron particles are attracted to these leakages, concentrating at the defect sites and producing a visible indication on the material’s surface.

Ultrasonic Testing

In Ultrasonic Testing, high-frequency sound waves are transmitted into a material to detect imperfections or changes in material properties. The most common technique is pulse echo, where sound is introduced into a test object, and reflections (echoes) from internal imperfections or geometrical surfaces are received. For example, in shear wave weld inspection, a defect within the weld produces an indication extending to the upper limits of the screen due to sound reflection.

Visual Testing

Visual examination is the most basic NDT method, where inspectors visually inspect a part to detect surface imperfections. This can range from simple visual inspection to using advanced computer-controlled camera systems for automated recognition and measurement of component features.

Radiography Testing

Radiographic weld inspection is a widely used NDT method valued across industries such as aerospace, automotive, construction, shipbuilding, pressure vessel, pipeline, and parts manufacturing. Radiographic interpreters analyze radiographic images of welds to identify, classify, and assess discontinuities. They apply specified code criteria to determine if discontinuities are defects or acceptable conditions.
